  • Our 1.5 year old rescue has recently learned she can jump this fence. Because our back fence is technically the property of the HOA we can't do anything about it. I've been doing my best to find a new home for her (with lots of land, or a tall fence) to no avail. Unfortunately when she jumps it's to chase other dogs, so she just isn't safe in our yard. :( I am completely heartbroken. The silver lining is Im walking her a lot more and getting steps in while we search. But long term, for the rest of her life (for her sake) this just isn't feasible. :( if anyone has any recommendations (aside from an invisible fence, because that won't deter her when she gets fixated on chasing another dog) I am all ears!!

It sounds like you're doing your best to help your dog, and I believe exercise can play a huge role in calming her down. If you continue walking her regularly and getting her involved with other dogs, she’ll likely tire out more and lose the urge to jump over the fence or chase after fish and other dogs. This way, she'll start to see the backyard as a more peaceful space for resting and playing rather than a place to escape.

As for the fence issue, since you’re dealing with HOA restrictions, one option could be adding a higher fence or some kind of barrier to discourage her from jumping over. You could also consider training her to associate positive behavior in the yard, like offering treats or praise when she stays inside the boundaries. Regular walks and playtime will help keep her active, and with consistent training, you can help her learn to stay safe and content at home. You’ve got this – and it sounds like you're already making great progress!

Training, adding on to the inside of the fence to make it higher, or electric fences are the best options. My dog will try to push through our vinyl fencing. It's plenty high for him not to go over it, but we didn't trust the panels to hold. A few times into the electric fence, and I honestly haven't needed it turned on after the first couple of months. He still stays away from that side of the yard a year later. Just remember to turn those off before mowing and keep free of debris.
