  • I almost quit this DietBet, even though I had already hit my goal on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, I had to say goodbye to my 14-year-old dog, and honestly, I did not want to do anything. Then I found this photo from 2014, when she was only about 1.5 years old, and it reminded me exactly who she was: tiny, determined, and all heart. We used to have a local 5K fun run with a dog-and-human category. The first year, she won 1st place despite being only 10 pounds. The next year, she set the course record. The third year, a high school track sprinter showed up with her whippet, and when they took off at the start, I mentally gave up on winning—even though my dog never did. She still gave everything she had, and we finished a very close 2nd. Looking back, I know we might have won if I had matched her belief and effort. Even more fitting, her time from the year before was still faster than the winning time that third year, and she held that course record until the event was eventually canceled during COVID. So, I’m dedicating this DietBet to her. I do not want my grief to become the reason I stop. She would have wanted me to keep going, to give my best, and to finish strong—just like she always did.

So sorry for your loss. My Pom is 14 and I'm dreading the day she's gone. Keep going!
