Well, I did it! My first half marathon, with a finish time of 02:11:21. I placed 865 out of 2012 females and 80 out of 164 for my age category 45-49.

It’s not too often that I feel proud of myself; much less verbalise it to others. But I genuinely do today because I’ve worked hard for these results. Just over a month ago, I’d never run more than half the distance I ran this morning. A little over a year ago my BMI fell in the Obese range (when I first started running I was obese) & now I’m fast approaching a return to a healthy BMI. Whatsmore, less than four years ago I was drinking 1-2 bottles of wine a night and struggled to go more than a day or two without.

Today I’m 1316 days alcohol free AND a “runner” (I still feel a bit sheepish typing that as I never would have thought of myself as being or able to be a runner, but after this morning’s effort I think I can confidently own that I’m a recreational runner now).

Thank you for the encouragement I received on here in the lead up & the inspo from fellow DietBet members who are runners (special shout-out to Karla) ?

Crossing the finish line is the validation for all the changes you have made to this point. It speaks of your resolve to change, and your discipline to follow through. You have every right to call yourself a runner!

Just amazing!!! I’m so happy for you and bursting with joy. You did it. Great photos.

  • Less than 1 pound to meet my goal. This past weekend I ran a half marathon.

Me again. I just wanted to acknowledge what you shared re your osteoarthritis. That must be difficult to manage. Frustrating too no doubt. But I definitely think listening to our bodies, especially pain levels, is so important and it makes sense that you are planning to “retire” from running after your fall race. Personally I don’t believe in pushing through pain-not unless it is very time limited, like in the last mile of a race-as it is often a signal that we need to slow down, rest and recover. And for management of a chronic condition I imagine it is key to do what you can not to exacerbate or aggravate. I saw on your profile that you have 6 kids and now I know all the running you’ve done too; you, along with your body, are truly remarkable, Karla!

Less than a fortnight to go now until I participate in my first ever half marathon! Am simultaneously nervous and excited. It’s been a long time in the making, getting my fitness to a level where I’m reasonably confident I can complete it.

Re weight I seem to be hovering a little at the moment. I’m not gaining but probably more maintaining than losing. And next week I’ll p need to abandon most calorie restriction efforts, & likely decrease my running too, in the lead up to race day. So fingers crossed II don’t regain weight as a result, but if I do, that will then be June’s challenge!

I hope everyone is continuing to strive towards their goals. Good luck for the fourth weigh-in.

  • Wow! I was hovering around the same weight for most of the last month, maybe my average lowering by a pound or two, and hadn't dropped a lot for a couple months (just barely enough to keep up with the game). But this morning I dropped by a full 4lb from when I last weighed about 4 days ago!!! I couldn't believe it, that puts me down below 170 for the first time in a couple years, and below my final goal for this round! Also just 8lb more to get to my overall goal weight for this year. It's officially the lowest I have been since I started having kids 12 years ago. I am riding cloud 9 right now and feeling motivated to keep going 💪

Scales - they bring good news, and they bring bad news. Glad it was good for you!

Weight loss is crazy. I usually stay at the same weight for like a week or two, then drop like 4 pounds overnight.... doesn't make any sense

I’m starting to realize there is no more I can do about my size I haven’t lost weight in over a month I’m stuck at 200lbs with working out 5 days a week and eating 2 meals a day. My post pregnancy body doesn’t seem to care just wants to be heavy and look like I’m unhealthy

Progress isn't just on the scale. It can also be improved function, better cholesterol, increased movement and strength, less out of breath on the stairs, increased energy, and more. Don't be discouraged and keep taking care of yourself

It sounds like you may be OVER stressing your body. (NBHWC Coach here)

Things to try:
- cut back to 3 days a week of workout, and go for a nice medium walk another day
- our bodies like smaller amounts of food more times a day. Instead of 2 big meals, maybe try 4 smaller ones.
- how is your protein intake? You need more than you think. Plant proteins are great to add, as well as protein powder.
- fiber is an underrated weight loss helper. Whole grains and green veggies are a great place to get fiber.
- how is your hydration? Under drinking water can cause stasis.
- how is your sleep hygiene? Getting less than 6 hours a night halts weight loss.
- how is your stress? Untreated distress produces excess cortisol, which is a big contributor to weight gain or stall.

  • I'm at an interesting point in my journey that I've been before, and it sounds like a great problem, but it's really not.

I'm having a hard time getting to my calorie limit every day. Now that warmer weather is here and I'm mowing at least three times each week, I'm getting some good exercise and you'd think I would be hungry, but it's not happening.

The problem is one I've experienced before. I'm aiming for 1700 calories per day. When I was losing weight during Covid in 2021, I entered a very long stall during the summer, even though I was getting so many steps in each week. I finally had friends tell me what the problem was - I wasn't hungry then either and was only getting about 1200 calories per day, and they said that was causing my body to go into starvation mode, and I wasn't burning fat anymore.

I don't know if that's true or not, but I started getting closer to my goal again and the weight started back down.

It's getting close to 9:00 p.m. here and I'm at 1123 calories for the day I'm going to have to eat something else, but I really don't want to. It's too late to be eating much, so I'll have a cheese stick and a cookie, which should get me up to 1400 calories.

Talk about a reversal of fortune! I'm in this Transformer because I couldn't stop eating, and now I'm in a position where I don't want to eat!

    It's a mad world!

PS - It seems that many experts believe "starvation mode" is a myth, and that it's all in our head. I don't think my head is smart enough to think of something like that!

I guess the heart of my suggestion was to try drinking your calories, I know for me the protein and fiber in a shake help me reach my macro goals, but if you don't need them put whatever in it that you still need and try drinking your calories! Maybe you need a milkshake lol

Keith A.

@Naomi - if I could keep it so just "a" milkshake, that might not be bad. But I tend to like more than one of them soon after the first one is gone!

@Dale - resetting the appetite is a good thing. I may not be losing any of the fat I want to get rid of, but my stomach is losing weight! Maybe that's where all of my weight loss is happening!

  • Scale wise it feels a little like two steps forward followed by one step back right now… but I have to remind myself it is still progress overall, just at a slower pace. Hope everyone else is going well.

Yes I feel this! I have 1 lb left from today to meet this round's goal, but man is it hard to move the scale down this month!

Keith A.

My weight loss graph up close looks like someone's really bad EKG with all the ups and downs that show. But stepping back and looking at the long term, it's all good. As long as the trend continues down, I can live with the daily fluctuation.

  • I hit a milestone today, and that means you did also!

Today is day 100 that I've logged at least one meal everyday! I started on Monday, January 27, which I believe was the first day of the Transformer.

That means you've been pledging to be healthier for 100 days as well, at least as far as this game is concerned.

Congratulations on your effort! Consistency is so critical to our long-term success!

100 days, wow. The days certainly add up don’t they! Definitely enough time to form a new health habit/s & start to form some consistency

  • Here’s to cardiovascular health! How is everyone going in Round 4? Perhaps we can share tips and strategies for maintaining motivation?

For me I feel like I’m doing well on the exercise front (it definitely helps having an upcoming half-marathon to prepare for). I’m being consistent with it, plus increasing intensity and challenge as I go. My diet is less consistent, however, and I find myself succumbing to temptation more than what I did in the earlier rounds eg yesterday I bought an almond croissant with my morning coffee. I think I need to guard against “rationalising” bad food choices because of the running I’m doing, as I’ll quickly cancel out any energy deficit! Plus I know that, active or inactive, pastries aren’t going to do me any favour/deliver any nutritional benefits…

Mowing is my main form of exercise. It gets my heart rate up and I can walk at a pace that is comfortable for my knee. It's helping me slowly build up strength in both knees, but especially the one that was most recently replaced.

Thalia G.

I fell off the walking habit bc of finals but am slowly getting back into the groove! I have hot yoga and lots of walking in the horizon for today :)

Some tips - get a ClassPass! You can get 30 days gratuitous and book many classes and try different studios out without having to pay their memberships. You can also book spas for facials and massages when you pay full price. I’m getting two months to try it out and see if I’d rather jump around than go to a traditional gym. It’s helping me look forward to exercise as it’s not the same thing over and over.
