Why We Fail:

As I've gotten older, I've taken more time to reflect on my choices in life. Many times I've decided to get in great shape only to watch the year fly by and end up in December about where I started. Worse yet, I'll drop down to the 170s only slowly rise back up over 200. It's like my body has a default setting!

It's not my body, it's me.

I fail because I go back to "comfortable". It's as though I make the reward of getting in shape a free six months of slacking off. Then sadly by the end of the six months, I no longer feel great every day. My sleep is worse. My body aches. My mind is not fully awake each day. Why do I do this to myself?

I believe it boils down to creating an unsustainable lifestyle.

If I eat start eating too few calories or have a diet that is so restricted, I'm basically screaming for the finish line. I know you know where this is going but I ask you this, find something that works and you enjoy.

If you are enjoying your diet and exercise, you'll keep doing it.

There is no reward when it's over because the diet and exercise are the daily reward. This might mean there isn't a holiday season of massive meals or weekends of beer, wine and liquor (If you're over 21). It means now you're excited about morning stretches, getting in your steps, lifting weights and getting a full night of sleep.

Spend the remainder of this Dietbet rewiring your brain.

Don't have cheat days where you are the old you. Cheat days are just you allowing yourself to do things you know you shouldn't. Imagine having a "Cheat day" on your spouse! With that said, don't hold to a diet that is so restrictive you can't maintain it. A health balanced diet shouldn't have "cheat days" because you're getting what you want daily.

Thank you for listening to this reflection. I welcome your thoughts and whether you agree/disagree. This has just helped me on this Sunday morning to reflect and recenter myself on my goals.

I checked if it was possible to weight in before breakfast, it wasn't.
It became available AFTER I ate!
Luckily I was a good bit beyond my goal so I could do it before heading away for the weekend, and still be within the lines!

  • Friday Fridge- and Pantry-Diving: these are the left over bits at the end of the food week that resulted in a hearty and tasty salad worth 650kc, 32g protein.

    1/2 c. mixed greens and 1/2 c. baby spinach finely shredded, two tiny heirloom tomatoes diced, half an overly ripe avocado, 3/4 c. reheated lentils, 2 tbsp sunflower seeds, 2 tbsp hemp seeds, 25g feta, 6 sprigs of minced cilantro, and half a sprig of diced chives.

I was at my goal last weekend…but unfortunately due to monthly hormonal fluctuations I am no longer there, the scale is saying I’m up ⬆ 5 pounds. 😫

Soo, I'm definitely not making my goal this round. I think I've lost maybe 2lbs.

My workload essentially tripled at the start of this month as I took on a new teaching role on top of running a business and I have honestly been working 7 days a week, 12 hour days because that was the only way to get everything done... which has inevitably meant that health has come second (or third, maybe fourth).

Because I've been so fatigued some evenings I simply haven't cared what I was eating - I just needed enough energy to keep going, which has usually meant sugar.

I have just signed up to a healthy meal delivery service to help me for February and cut out a lot of shopping / meal prep time. I'm brainstorming today other ways I could help myself out so I can try and hit my goal for February.

But I was just thinking...

If I miss this round's goal, how does the next round work? Do I have to lose THIS round AND next round?! Because then I'll never catch up. :( Please could someone advise me?

Also any tips on how to prioritise health whilst working 70+ hour weeks lol...

Congrats Eli :). My not hitting the goal this month is not related to veganism at all - it's related to starting a new job on top of running a business, so I've been working 7 days a week, 12 hours a day which I am not used to at all and have just felt exhausted. I chose to outsource meal prep as that's one thing I can guarantee I can still get healthy vegan meals to help. If only I could outsource writing and designing a curriculum and running a business too lol. Yeah, maybe another game would be better so I don't feel behind!

I get meal deliveries too. Best thing I've done for my health and I've been doing it for over 2 years now. You'll be surprised how much time it saves AND mental energy. No more figuring out what to eat, its just in the fridge. Add a few other healthy snacks so you don't run to the sugar....and use the saved time to get some movement in. It will help with the stressful workload! And I agree with Eli, this group is very encouraging. It helps keep me motivated, even if I don't win the money in round 1, I'm moving forward which is a win in my book.

I haven't commented in this game yet. And to be honest, I'm not sure what to share. I'm not overweight; just using this to keep healthy habits. For the first time in a while, I started running again, about 3 miles a day. I'm not fast, like 12-13 minute miles, and it's not every day, but I am getting faster. This morning, I hit an 11-minute mile. I also weighed myself and am down 8 pounds - so that's a win!

  • First workout of 2025!! I’ve got a concert at the Sphere in Las Vegas next month for my birthday and a family cruise in June where I will need to do a lot of walking. I need to be able to walk more than 100 feet without huffing and puffing. (Long Haulers C0V!D sucks!!) So when you discover your gym has the same exercise machine that you kicked butt on in physical therapy when you could not even stand on your own, much less walk, there are NO EXCUSES! I went last week and I couldn’t even figure out how to turn on the machine and felt so overwhelmed, frustrated, and embarrassed that I left then sat in my car and cried. So I asked a sweet young lady at the counter to show me. I managed 13 minutes on this bad boy before my son texted me that his class got out early (thank goodness 😜) but I had committed to do 20 minutes if I was able, and I was! (Never mind the 30 minutes I sat in my car in the parking lot before even getting up the courage to go inside. Minutes I could have rewarded myself with an Aqua Massage after exercising if I’d gone in right away! ???????????) Got my heart rate got up to 120 and oxygen stayed at 94% or above. I’m calling it a WIN! It’s a start anyway. Gotta start somewhere right? Yay me!! Last fall I dropped the boys at their college and drove right past this Planet Fitness on my way to McDonald’s just about every weekday. That’s another win! Treated myself to a nice Cobb Salad with grilled chicken at Whataburger afterward since I had missed breakfast. Trying to stay under my calorie allotment today. I haven’t been tracking them at all this month but I’ve still got 1.5lbs to lose to make my goal on Saturday morning. Time to buckle down and hold myself accountable. I can do this!

NSV. My knee pain is gone. At the beginning of this year I very consistently felt pain in my knees when doing lunges, and sometimes squats. Today was leg day, zero knee pain.
